Appetite for Destruction, the self-proclaimed “ultimate tribute to Guns N’ Roses,” owes its shtick as much to René Magritte as to Axl Rose. True to Magritte’s representational troublemaking of The Treachery of Images, Appetite for Destruction has constructed fitting non-identities for its members. The guitarist? He’s called “Notquiteslash.” The lead singer? “Notquiteaxl.” More to the point, between the solos, the top hats, and the stage banter AFD claims to have culled from “a variety of live shows and videos,” the group sure lives up to its Notquitenamesakes, with beefy renditions of the greatest cock-rock to pop up since Elvis learned to separate the hip bone from the thigh bone.
