Bruce Wayne wouldn’t be caught dead in a handknit sweater-suit emblazoned with wings, but fiber artist Mark Newport is probably OK with this. Combining his childhood obsession with comics and memories of the sweaters his mother knitted for him and his brother, Newport re-creates iconic costumes, like those of the Fantastic Four and Captain America, and develops outfits for new heroes Argyle Man and Every-Any-No Man. Newport likes to then wear his finished creations in an attempt to understand what makes the superpower-endowed so powerful. It’s not a perfect experiment: Superman didn’t wear a yarn cape while fighting crime.
THE EXHIBITION IS ON VIEW DAILY FROM 10 A.M. to 5:30 P.M. TO JAN. 3 AT THE RENWICK GALLERY, 1661 PENNSYLVANIA AVE. NW. FREE. (202) 633-1000.
