Akron/Family is proof that positive thinking will take a band somewhere. Back in 2005 the quartet’s members were quietly composing their self-titled debut while cloistered in the cramped confines of a Brooklyn apartment. But Akron/Family kept its attitude firmly aligned toward peace and love. They even got notoriously dour ex-Swans frontman Michael Gira— a man who built his career on lyrics like “Life that’s nothing but unreal/Except on the goddamned slave ship of failure”—to make a relatively upbeat record. And now, four years on, Akron/Family’s most recent record, Set ’Em Wild, Set ’Em Free, finally cashes in all of the good karma the band has accumulated in exchange for one big blast of Afro-cosmic out-jazz hippie-loving warmth that no Williamsburg crash pad could ever hope to contain.
