City Paper is not for tourists
If the idea of a one-night-only broadcast of the Vans Warped Tour’s 15th Anniversary Celebration baffles you, consider this: The festival is now older than many of its attendees. During its initial run in 1995, the tour’s lineup read like Lollapalooza’s mall-loving younger brother, with bands as disparate as L7, Sick of It All, and Seaweed along with pre-stardom incarnations of Sublime and No Doubt. In the years that followed, more and more bands were squeezed into the lineups, the corporate sponsorship got more in-your-face, and the stages were plonked on seemingly every square inch of the grounds. The film, on the other hand, is relatively manageable, presenting an hour’s worth of live performances from Los Angeles last Sunday night by chain-wallet mainstays Bad Religion, Pennywise, and NoFx. And…Katy Perry. Punk’s not dead; it’s just enjoying the comforts of middle age and cargo shorts.
THE FILM SHOWS AT 8 P.M. AT THE AMC MAZZA GALLERiE, 5300 WISCONSIN AVE. NW. $12.50. (888) 262-4386.
