There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
Cedric Burnside grew up playing drums in the backing band of his grandfather, the late, great Mississippi bluesman R.L. Burnside. Steve “Lightnin’” Malcolm is a white guitar prodigy and native of Springfield, Missouri, who also counts R.L. as a musical mentor. The unlikely pair have two albums together, including last year’s 2 Man Wrecking Crew, released to much acclaim on Delta Groove. Showcasing both artists’ songwriting, the album’s lyrics are at times pedestrian, but what sets the work apart are its spare, funk-driven melodies and Malcolm’s extraordinary guitar work. The duo has had occasional brushes with fame—they played a few shows with Jimmy Buffet, who is a fan, and Burnside appeared in the film Black Snake Moan, which he says is very loosely based on the life of his grandfather. But they spend most of their time on the road these days playing the music they love before mid-sized crowds.
