When Wavves singer/guitarist Nathan Williams showed up to a show in Barcelona this past May, in no condition (inebriated? stoned?) to make it through his set, he must have been beyond fucked up. Because, really, it can’t take too much effort to produce a reasonable live estimation of his band’s fuzzy, lo-fi, pop sound. Still, this may not be the most confounding episode to involve Wavves in the past six months. That distinction goes to Williams’ recent full-time hiring of Hella drummer Zach Hill, whose busy approach seems to be the exact opposite of what might go best with the guitarist’s simple chord progressions. In any case, the duo have reportedly been working on a new recording (the band’s third), so interested parties should count on hearing something interesting when Wavves plays Rock & Roll Hotel—that is, if the band can finish its set.
Wavves performs at 8:30 P.M. on Thursday, Oct. 1, at the Rock & Roll Hotel, 1353 H St. NE. $10–12. (202) 388-7625
