Gluing a beard on David Cross to make him look like Allen Ginsberg for Todd Haynes’ 2007 film I’m Not There may have been the most inspired casting call in the history of the world, and likewise, casting him as Tobias Funke, the closeted psychiatrist/actor on Arrested Development, probably kept the sitcom afloat for the entire third season, long after Henry Winkler’s character—and the show itself—had literally and figuratively jumped the shark. But even though everything David Cross touches with his atheistic zeal eventually turns to gold (normally once it hits DVD), his best work will always be his standup, an FCC-free forum. Choice barbs are reserved for gun enthusiasts, Republicans, and true believers, as well as lifestyle liberals and anyone, generally, who doesn’t worship David Cross. Catch him now before shooting for an Arrested Development movie returns him to the closet.
DAVID CROSS PERFORMS AT 8 P.M. AT WARNER THEATRE, 13TH & E STREETS NW. $35. (202) 783-4000.
