Jolly Pumpkin Bam Bière
Where Spotted: Chevy Chase Wine and Liquor, 5544 Connecticut Ave. NW
Walloon Boy: Bam Bière is a Belgian-style saison, sort of a baby version of the famous Saison Dupont. It’s bright, lemony, and dry as a mouthful of hay, with a yeasty-bread tang and a hint of sourness. And, like the saisons of old, it’s low alcohol, only 4.5 percent abv, lower than Bud or Corona.
Yeast Man: Farmers would traditionally brew saison beers in their barns for summertime drinking, and they’re seasonably light. Meanwhile, the country breeze would bring in wild aromas and flavors, resulting in these hard-to-describe, “funky” flavors. (I call it “stank.”) Michigan-based Jolly Pumpkin made its name on funky farmhouse ales like this one, and it’s one of the most exciting brewers in America right now.
