Anyone who grew up getting their pants scared off by the creepiness of Peter and the Wolf (both Christopher Lee and Boris Karloff have narrated recordings) may scoff a bit at Imagination Stage’s much-more kid-friendly version. The Disney-lite puppets, the dilution of Prokofiev’s indelibly motivic instrumentation, the general under-representation of the English horn—all may have you wondering if you should have tried to introduce your children, nieces, nephews, etc., to classical music via the Firebird Suite instead. The kids, though, will likely stop laughing only long enough to ask whether wolves are really susceptible to gospel rave-ups—and perhaps whether Santa wouldn’t mind bringing along an oboe next Christmas.
PETER AND THE WOLF SHOWS AT 1:30 P.M. AND 4 P.M. SATURDAYS AND SUNDAYS to MARCH 21 AT IMAGINATION STAGE, 4908 AUBURN AVE., BETHESDA. $10–$21. (301) 280-1660.
