Brahms’ German Requiem
Thursday, June 10 at 8pm
Music Center at Strathmore
Marin Alsop, conductor
Janice Chandler-Etemé, soprano
Stephen Powell, baritone
The Washington Chorus (Julius Wachner, music director)
Marin Alsop closes the season with a concert of innocence and remembrance. In Knoxville, Summer of 1915, the words of poet-author James Agee recall an idyllic summer evening, delicately set to Barber’s folk-like music. Brahms’ choral masterpiece, A German Requiem, was begun as a loving farewell to his mother, concluding as a grandly moving musical commentary on the fleeting beauty of human life.
Attend a FREE pre-concert lecture with WETA’s David Ginder. Music Notes LIVE! begins at 7 pm. No reservations are required but capacity is limited, so patrons will be admitted on a first-come, first-served basis.
