Dubbing itself a “satirical documentary fairy tale,” Goodbye, How Are You? is nothing the Brothers Grimm would recognize. A meandering pastiche of images and aphorisms, Boris Mitic’s film takes a wry look at Serbia’s troubled political climate, juxtaposing the absurd (a dirty Santa Claus talking on a cell phone; a collection of sausages being sold from the trunk of a car) with the frightening (a corpse being dragged down the street). Mitic tells the story of a man who wants to die for what he believes in but doesn’t believe in anything anymore. (He thinks his best option would be a duel, but he can’t find anyone to fight.) The story is told through dark one-liners like, “We wanted the war to end as soon as possible. That’s why we started it first.” But this fairy tale has no happily-ever-after.
