Though its name invokes the Deep South, the Delta Spirit is actually from San Diego. Not that you can tell. This is folksy Americana with an old-timey sensibility—and hence, a cross-regional, cross-generational appeal. On the band’s second album, History From Below, there are urgent, up-tempo numbers like “911” (a Gen Y response to…oh, you know) and the punk-tinged “Bushwick Blues.” Some of the Delta Spirit’s subject matter is dark—take the vengeance-themed “Ballad of Vitality”—but don’t expect the show to be: At a recent hometown concert, frontman Matt Vasquez led the audience in telling his grandma “I love you.” As they say down South: shucks.
