CANCELED. SHOW RESCHEDULED FOR JULY 8 AT HOLE IN THE SKY
I pity bands like New York’s Menya, just as I pity Uffie, the French Ed Banger label’s in-house sexpot: Right when hipsters got over their tinny beats, vocoded and/or Autotuned vocals, and appropriation of hip-hop patois, Ke$ha tapped their MO, jettisoned their penchant for irony, and sharpened their hooks. In other words, she made their music worthwhile—and became a pop star in the process. Still: If you, like me, frequently catch yourself singing along to “Tik Tok” while driving but are looking for a more guiltless guilty pleasure, Menya will do ya. I saw the trio in a converted warehouse in Philadelphia two years ago, and the group’s set-up amounted to a laptop, three mics, and more vulgar brio than a John Waters film.
MENYA PERFORMS WITH 2AM CLUB AND TVTV AT DC9, 1940 9TH ST. NW. $10. (202) 483-5000.
