You don’t have to be Christian to recognize the power and beauty of African-American gospel singing. The How Sweet the Sound tour offers church choirs large and small the chance to compete in a national American Idol-like competition (for both bragging rights and a financial prize—we won’t discuss how “Christian” that is or isn’t). Such stars as Donald Lawrence, Marvin Sapp, CeCe Winans, Richard Smallwood, and Maurette Brown will judge, host, and sing duets with the likes of Edgewood’s Greater Mount Calvary Men of Valor, Mount Vernon Triangle’s Southern Baptist Church Praise & Worship Center’s SBC Chorale, and a host of others from Maryland and Virginia.

THE EVENT TAKES PLACE AT 7:30 P.M. AT THE VERIZON CENTER, 601 F ST. NW. $5–$7. (202) 628-3200.
