Mallika Sarabhai is a lightning rod in India for taking on works ranging from Peter Brooks’ staging of the Indian epic Mahabharata to Bertolt Brecht’s Indian adaptation of The Good Person of Szechwan. She is an iconic feminist figure who strongly believes that one of the primary functions of Art is to make us take a critical look at the problems in society. Sarabhai uses her varied background from Bharata Natyam, Kuchipudi, the folk idioms of India, and her acting skills to create sizzling social commentaries on issues ranging from land rights, the lingering problems of the caste systems, to all the way back to the myths of India that mistreat women and minorities.
