In 2003, on the heels of Welcome Interstate Managers and the ubiquitous “Stacy’s Mom,” the power-pop quartet Fountains of Wayne earned a left-field Best New Artist nomination at the Grammy Awards. The band found it flattering, sure, but also strange—by that point it’d been around for more than seven years, having released its self-titled debut in 1996. It’s now seven years After Stacy’s Mom, and songwriter-bassist Adam Schlesinger is still penning big, infectious hooks and absurdist lyrics. Note the title track from Fountains’ 2007 Traffic and Weather, about horny radio broadcasters: “One anchor turns and faces the other/Says it’s time that I made you my lover.” If you just smirked, show up at the Birchmere tonight. If you didn’t, you probably think Fountains of Wayne deserves its one-hit-wonder status.
