The Irish believe in leprechauns, the Dutch in gnomes, and Icelanders in elves. That’s right, elves. Citizens of the windswept North Atlantic island attribute all sorts of odd happenings to the mysterious little people. If a road-construction project keeps running into problems, blame the wee ones and then reroute the highway so they’re not disturbed (true story). One of these believers—a somewhat elven looking gent by the name of Jónsi—decided to start a band called Sigur Rós. It wrote swooping, soaring songs that made it seem like angels were collaborating with aliens. Now he’s taking a break to tour his debut solo album, Go. His songs are poppier and less experimental, but still sound celestial and otherworldly. Go to appease the elves—perhaps you’ll decrease the chances of further Icelandic economic collapses or volcanic eruptions.
JÓNSI PERFORMS WITH MOUNTAIN MAN AT 7 P.M. (ALSO NOV. 8, WHICH IS SOLD OUT) AT THE 9:30 CLUB, 815 V ST. NW. $35. (202) 265-0930.
