There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
Easygoing singer-songwriter Donavon Frankenreiter has been a go-to for fans of lighthearted surfer ballads since signing on to friend and fellow waverider Jack Johnson’s Brushfire Records label in 2004. Following Johnson’s lead, Frankenreiter plays a familiar brand of bonfire-friendly tunes that have only grown more formulaic, culminating in this year’s Glow, which he released on his own label, Liquid Tambourine Records. The musician, along with his trademark burlyman ‘stache, is responsible for the infamous radio headache “Free”—it remains to be seen whether that will be reason enough for fans to skip out on third helpings of cranberry sauce and stuffing to catch his show. It’s about the groovy, not the gravy, people.
DONAVON FRANKENREITER PERFORMS WITH XIMENA SARINANA AT 7 P.M. AT THE 9:30 CLUB, 815 V ST. NW. $20. (202) 265-0930.
