City Paper is not for tourists
In May, the District lost its reigning post-punk diva, Carol Bui, to the other coast’s Washington. But tonight she’s offering hometown fans a preview of her new album, Red Ship, due out in March. Bui’s last album, Everyone Wore White, spurred comparisons to ovaries-out rockers Kristin Hersh and P.J. Harvey, and critics lauded Bui’s ability to tap D.C.’s tradition of punk intensity and apply it to catchy tunes. She says her upcoming album is sexier and draws on new hobbies like belly dancing and playing the drums. If the single “Mira: You’re Free With Me” is any indication, she’s telling the truth. When confronted with the song’s shimmering tambourines, tribal pulse, muscular guitars, and Bui’s now-trademark howl, audiences may not know whether to mosh or shimmy.
