Depending on your view of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, mid-January is either a time to embrace Oscar and catch up on the nominees you’ve missed, or lobotomize yourself with Season of the Witch and Kevin James comedies. If you’re into the former, trek out to the Avalon Theatre’s screening of The Human Resources Manager, the inaugural selection in its latest film series, Reel Israel DC. Israel’s submission to the Academy for Best Foreign Film, Eran Riklis’ film has already taken five Israeli Academy Awards, among them Best Picture and Best Director. Riklis, whose last feature Lemon Tree was widely acclaimed in the U.S., seems to be making a broader statement with The Human Resources Manager, and the early Stateside press has been mixed. In the unlikely case of a dud, at least you’ll have gained a leg up in your office Oscar pool.
THE HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGER SCREENS AT 8 P.M. AT THE AVALON, 5612 CONNECTICUT AVE. NW. $11. (202) 966-6000.
