Every comedian starts somewhere, usually right near the bottom. Jim Carrey worked as a janitor to make ends meet; Jerry Seinfeld once sold lightbulbs; Tina Fey helmed the counter of a swim club snack bar. Luckily for the aspiring Laugh Factory headliners competing to be crowned the University of Maryland’s Funniest College Student, there’s a better way to make money than serving fake cheese-covered nachos to dripping wet customers. UMD wiseguys and funny girls have five minutes to amuse an audience of their peers and impress a panel of judges. One or two Terps will be chosen to compete at a larger regional standup showdown, with the ultimate winner scoring a paid hosting gig at DC Improv. If that doesn’t work out, there’s always the janitorial arts to fall back on.
THE COMPETITION TAKES PLACE AT 8 P.M. IN THE BALTIMORE ROOM AT THE STAMP STUDENT UNION, CAMPUS DRIVE AND UNION LANE, COLLEGE PARK. FREE. (301) 314-7174
