City Paper is not for tourists
Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. didn’t waste much time getting back out on the road after his eight-month stint in Rikers Island ended last November. Though Lil Wayne’s prison term was uneventful—“I’d bust a nigga’s ass at Uno,” he told Rolling Stone in January—Weezy is proving to be just as prolific in this new phase of his career as before he went away. After Rebirth, his failed experiment of ugly guitar licks and lots of Auto-Tune, Wayne’s September 2010 album I Am Not a Human Being (recorded before prison) and recent Red State mixtape were solid half-steps toward the May release of Tha Carter IV. Weezy’s Wiz Khalifa retort “Green and Yellow” shows he hasn’t lost his humor, and the new single “6 Foot, 7 Foot” proves his touch for crafting four minutes of clever rhymes without a break is as deft as ever.
Lil Wayne performs with Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross, Mixmaster Mike, and Travis Barker at 7 p.m. at Verizon Center, 601 F St. NW. $49.75-$200.75. (202) 397-7328.
