Richard and Mildred Loving were not searching for headlines when they were married in 1957 in the District, where as an interracial couple they could legally become husband and wife. Even when the Lovings were arrested for violating Virginia’s prohibition on miscegenation when they returned home to Caroline County, that injustice went largely unnoticed. They accepted their banishment from Virginia, though they later secretly returned. The Loving Story documents one couple’s fight to make what they knew was right and true legal under the law. While you know that there’s going to be a happy ending at the U.S. Supreme Court, the retelling of the Lovings’ story makes for high-stakes legal drama, complete with a treasure trove of archival footage of the couple’s attorney consultations and of homelife for the noble but forbidden couple. It might remind you of reality television, just in black and white. The Loving Story is a dignified treatment of one of the most important legal fights in American jurisprudence.
