Bringing a punk-like attitude to alt-country, this GRAMMY-winning vocalist made a mainstream splash with “Constant Craving” and other pop-rock ballads. A native of Western Canada, k.d. lang put the alternative in alternative-country back in the mid-’80s, earning a GRAMMY for Best Female Country Vocal Performance before switching gears in the ’90s to become a more mainstream pop-rock artist. Celebrating 25 years in the recording industry, k.d. lang released Recollection in 2010.
Fronted by sibling duo Barbara and Ethan Gruska, Los Angeles-based Belle Brigade boasts velvet vocal harmonies and honest lyrics. Their self-titled debut is set to come out April 19. The Los Angeles Times named them one of the “Faces to Watch” in 2011, praising the group for their “considerable charisma within songs that gleam with hooks and pour over with earnest emotion.”
