It’s been another productive year for DMV rappers, but right now is Gods’Illa’s moment. The trio of Acem, Truth, and Powerful (they’re actually brothers) released their CPRmixtape in late July to instant acclaim. It’s hosted by Erykah Badu, but her participation amounts to no more than an official co-sign. And that’s fine, because the 21-track set is strong purely on Gods’Illa’s own merits: no-bullshit rhymes, timeless beats, and an overall sense that hip-hop is, y’know, art. None of the songs sounds casual or tossed-off, and they do more with a Crash Test Dummies sample than it deserves. Gods’Illa is stage-ready, too—look up the video from the group’s performance at last month’s Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival for a taste of the flavor.
Gods’Illa performs with members of Diamond District, Farafina Kan, and DTMD at 8 p.m. at U Street Music Hall, 1115 U St. NW. $15 in advance.
