In local politics, few donors are more reliable than Jeffrey Thompson. The owner of the largest minority-owned accounting firm in the country—and a managed health care provider that has a $320 million D.C. contract—Thompson, his companies, his employees, his contractors, his acquaintances, and others have donated more than $730,000 to D.C. pols in the last decade, records show. What’s he gotten in return? Plenty. When an audit found that his various health-care companies were overbilling, they quietly negotiated a settlement and continued to win city contracts. And, when the D.C. Council was trying to decide what to do with extra revenues earlier this year, cash for Thompson’s company rose to the top of the list. This cycle, though, he hasn’t given a dime—possibly because City Paper and the Post both wrote about his financial network in 2011.
