Chilean singer/songwriter Gepe sings breathily, digs Animal Collective, and wears a Beach Boys T-shirt in two videos. Just another indie rocker? Not exactly. The musician, born Daniel Riveros in the commune and city of San Miguel, admires Chilean folk-music hero Victor Jara, but he shows he isn’t afraid of synthesizers, either. Sure, his song “El Colibri y la Lluvia,” with its soft, coffee-shop vocals and acoustic strumming, is a tad predictable, but the sprightly “De Paso” gorgeously amalgamates bossa nova and synthpop. Throughout several albums and EPs released since 2004, Gepe shows he can emit wispy tenderness, but he sounds best when he’s lively.
Gepe performs with DJs Mafe and Rat at 10 p.m. at Velvet Lounge, 915 U St. NW. $7. velvetloungedc.com. (202) 462-3213.
