It takes some audacity to name your rap group La Coka Nostra, particularly if the members are aging white guys with established public personas. And it takes discipline to extend the coke-dealer metaphor in a way that isn’t cartoony or totally ho-hum. LCN’s members—Danny Boy and DJ Lethal of House of Pain, their Boston buddy Slaine, and Ill Bill of Non Phixion—do it with an orator/outlaw stance, pushing tough-guy tales and streetwise rants instead of narco-fantasy. (House of Pain’s Everlast, by the way, is on indefinite hiatus from the group while caring for a daughter with cystic fibrosis.) The tracks that have leaked from the upcoming Masters of the Dark Arts, LCN’s second album, have plenty of fight in them. The same goes for brothers-in-arms Jedi Mind Tricks, the Philly group led by Vinnie Paz, who’s been churning out dark, no-nonsense records since the late ‘90s. The two groups proudly fill hip-hop’s blue-collar niche, and they’ll do it together in D.C. tonight.
La Coka Nostra and Jedi Mind Tricks perform at 10 p.m. at 9:30 Club, 815 V St. NW. $25. 930.com. (202) 265-0930.
