Watching a dance performance from the lawn at Wolf Trap can be like looking at a painting from a mile away: Details of lines and phrasing disappear in the gulf between stage and grass. But once in a while a company comes along with a show that transcends the less-than-ideal conditions. “Story/Time” by the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company could be such a production. In it, Jones takes center stage, sitting at a desk as he tells stories about his career and relationships. His international cast of dancers, technically phenomenal performers, swirl around and through his words. It’s a piece that’s visually captivating and conceptually brilliant. It’s also Jones’ Wolf Trap debut, shifting a longstanding relationship with the Kennedy Center that, due to exclusivity contracts, kept Jones from performing at other area venues. When the opportunity arose, a spokesperson for Wolf Trap says, “We jumped on it.”

Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company performs at 8:30 p.m. at Wolf Trap Filene Center, 1551 Trap Road, Vienna. $4 lawn, $40 in-house. wolftrap.org. (877) 965-3872.
