Do you know D.C.?

We live in the age of the curator. Amateur librarians are organizing the world’s information through Wikipedia, and crate diggers are braving thrift-shop smells to unearth forgotten jams. One of the most specialized sonic detectives is D.C.’s Andrew Morgan, who’s made it his mission to rediscover ’80s electro-funk tracks and reissue them on his Peoples Potential Unlimited label or sell through his Earcave mailorder website. These post-disco, early hip-hop boogie beats are what Morgan will spin tonight at U Street Music Hall, and dancers used to four-on-the-floor drums will have to slow their rolls in order to sync with the genre’s midtempo slap bass and handclaps. But if you really want to jet back 30 years you’ll have to provide your own pleated zipper pants, mesh tank-tops, and short-waisted coats—or enlist the help of some curator who surely has an online store for the stuff. Andrew Morgan DJs The Whale with Beautiful Swimmers at 10 p.m. at U Street Music Hall, 1115 U St. NW. Free. ustreetmusichall.com. (202) 588-1880.
