Raheem DeVaughn has come a long way from his early days on the U Street NW scene. Ten years ago, DeVaughn was D.C.’s most promising upstart; his low-key backpacker attitude and captivating falsetto quickly made him a crowd favorite and eventually gained the attention of Jive Records execs, with whom he inked a deal. Now, DeVaughn is the city’s most visible soul singer, with scores of fans here and abroad. And while he’s made waves beyond D.C., he still keeps a footprint here: He hosts a weekly radio show from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. every Sunday on Blis.fm. You can’t call him local anymore, but you can’t call him an absentee, either: His show at Howard Theatre could be just another gig for the hometown favorite, or a reason to celebrate. Raheem DeVaughn performs with Black Alley at 8 p.m. at The Howard Theatre. 620 T Street, NW. $40. thehowardtheatre.com. (202) 803-2899.
