AFI puts on a lot of themed festivals each year, but the Latin American Film Festival is one of the best. Now in its 23rd year, the festival boasts its largest lineup to date—featuring 50 films that range from favorites at Cannes, Sundance, and other festivals, to slick big budget box-office hits and thought-provoking documentaries. Opening the festival is Michael D. Olmos’ Filly Brown, a stirring, L.A.-set drama about a young, promising hip-hop artist with big aspirations. Other anticipated films include Alex de la Iglesia’s sly media satire As Luck Would Have It, David Riker’s riveting immigration drama The Girl, and the outrageous award-winning zombie comedy Juan of the Dead.
