Hip-hop’s always had an iffy relationship with California. While the genre was created in New York, its most lasting subgenre—“gangsta rap”—was born in South Central Los Angeles. So it’s confusing when the next great L.A. rapper is supposedly the one to put the West Coast back on the map; they’ve been there since the beginning. Nonetheless, Kendrick Lamar is next in line to shift the power back to the left. He’s teamed up with the legendary Dr. Dre for his major label debut, good kid, m.A.A.d. city, dropping Oct. 22. Lamar’s already delayed the album once, so let’s hope he doesn’t follow Dre’s footsteps. Is Detox ever coming out? $36–$39
