City Paper is not for tourists
The Brooklyn-based Antibalas has affected D.C. culture in at least two specific ways: through some members’ involvement in Fela!, the Afrobeat musical that recently had a long run in town, and as a lodestar for The Funk Ark, a local Afro-Latin band that keeps getting better. Influence is nice, but grooves are what matter, and Antibalas has only gotten hotter and more locked-in as its devotion to Fela’s vision has deepened. What was once an homage is now its own channel of energy—one that rarely meanders, one that’s appealingly flawless at times. $18–$20.
