It’s billed as a residency, though it’s only a week long and Lang Lang is enough of an international artist that there isn’t much need for cross-cultural exchange here: We know the guy. Really, it’s an excuse to highlight the friendship between Lang and conductor Christoph Eschenbach. The two pianists couldn’t be more different: Eschenbach lives in his dour black nehru shirts, while Lang Lang wakes up every day looking like he stepped out of a David Bowie movie. But long before arriving in Washington, the NSO director saw the 17-year-old Chinese prodigy perform and cultivated a mentorship that’s lasted ever since. Lang Lang plays a recital on the 4th before joining his buddy for a trio of Beethoven piano concertos that weekend. $10–$85.
