“Our people…they don’t want to go to the theaters and suffer,” says Nucky Walder, producer of Teatro de la Luna’s 15th International Festival of Hispanic Theater. “They want comedies.” That might be true of most theatergoers, not just the Spanish-speaking audience the company targets. Year-round, Teatro de la Luna supports theater as seen from a Latin American perspective; but for this annual festival, it looks to outstanding theater from Hispanic cultures around the world. This year’s festival ropes in a lot of comedy, but it plans to include a few more traditional notes, like a Domincan adaptation of Othello called Otelo…Sniff, which incorporates Afro-West Indian dance. Beyond that, topics are all over the place, from new motherhood to Jesus to immigration. Don’t worry if you don’t habla español: All of the performances (except the kid shows) will include a simultaneous live interpretation through a headset.
