When it comes to avant-garde jazz, Don Byron embodies it all. The restless clarinetist has run klezmer, free improvisation, hip-hop, soul, and gospel—among others—through a jazz prism, always remaining on the experimental edge. Latin sounds are a standing interest within the hubbub of Byron’s music, but he’s taken it one step further by experimenting with traditional Mexican banda music. He’s still reinterpreting the music for himself, however: Banda is characterized by its large horn section and vocals, but Byron navigates the style with a quartet and no vocalist. His version of the music has been completely unrecorded thus far, so where Byron will take it is open to speculation—but count on it being completely his own.
