It’s been 27 years since a rat-tailed Aimee Mann emancipated herself from her controlling yuppie boyfriend in ’Til Tuesday’s iconic “Voices Carry” video. She revisited the character (and hairstyle) last month by turning the video for her latest single, “Labrador,” into a shot-for-shot remake of the one that launched her career, directed by Tom Scharpling, ringleader of WFMU’s cult radio program The Best Show. In the interim decades, Mann has become something of a comedian, appearing as Carrie Browstein’s housekeeper on the first season of Portlandia and sacrificing her toe in The Big Lebowski, but she remains a musician first, releasing eight solo albums and breaking out as a singer-songwriter. She’ll share the stage at the Birchmere tonight with punk rocker and adopted son of D.C. Ted Leo (who also appears in the “Labrador” video). The two might sound like an odd pairing, but both have a keen ear for melody, a captivating stage presence and, given Leo’s willingness to don an absurd wig in Mann’s video, neither take themselves too seriously.
Aimee Mann and Ted Leo perform at 7:30 p.m. at The Birchmere, 3701 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria. $59. birchmere.com. (703) 549-7500.
