It took a while, but the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office finally made an honest man out of Sulaimon Brown. This summer, Vince Gray campaign aides Thomas Gore and Howard Brooks pleaded guilty to trying to conceal from the feds that Brown’s story of being paid by the Gray campaign in order to stay in the 2010 mayoral race and bash Adrian Fenty was true. But Brown’s bigger contribution is that he opened the door into the shady world of D.C. campaign finances, behind which the feds found what they say was an illegal “shadow campaign” funded by one of the city’s biggest contractors. We still don’t know if Brown will ultimately bring down the mayor he was once secretly paid to help get elected, but his stamp on District politics is already undeniable.
