D.C.’s streetcar was supposed to be running by now. City officials said in late 2010 that it’d be online by spring 2012. Then, in August 2011, they pushed that date back to summer 2013. It should come as no surprise by now that this year saw even more delays. On Sept. 21, the Kingman Park Civic Association filed a historic preservation application to landmark Spingarn High School, on whose campus a planned streetcar barn and maintenance facility would be located. In a Council hearing in October, District Department of Transportation Director Terry Bellamy confessed that the landmarking battle would likely push the streetcar’s opening into 2014. With the Historic Preservation Review Board’s vote in favor of landmarking on Nov. 29, the car barn’s future is uncertain and so is the streetcar’s launch date. But hey, the tracks are laid!
