Anyone who’s been to Graceland or knows anything about Elvis understands that the King of Rock ’n’ Roll has inspired many bizarre tributes, from cupcakes to love poems. The H Street Playhouse hosts one of the more action-packed celebrations of the King’s birth this weekend when Elvis’ Birthday Fight Club returns to the ring. Though it sounds crazy and possibly illegal, the title spells out exactly what to expect: a burlesque-themed evening of bouts, with special appearances by local burlesque stars Kittie Glitter and Candy del Rio—and Elvis himself. Also dropping by is Commodious, the King’s “throne.” The competitors remain a mystery until the fight begins, but know that these aren’t your typical fighters: Last year featured tussles between a $5 bill and a Euro and a cupcake and a hot dog. Is it absurd? Yes, but hilariously so. And maybe this year, Elvis will face the greatest villain of them all: a peanut butter, banana, and bacon sandwich.
Elvis’ Birthday Fight Club begins at 8:30 p.m. and runs to Jan. 5 at the H Street Playhouse, 1365 H St. NE. $16–$20. (202) 544-0703. outofthisworldparty.com.
