There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
Rappers Killer Mike and El-P don’t seem compatible at all. Last year, Mike released the excellent R.A.P. Music, which condemned Reaganomics, crooked cops, and the U.S. justice system. His album’s producer, El-P, is way more psychedelic: His high-wired recent album, Cancer4Cure, embraced spacey break beats and meditative flows. If the albums have anything in common, it’s that they both won heaps of praise. But at least the odd pairing is a fruitful one: In June, Mike and El-P will drop an LP from their new collaborative project, Run the Jewels. Their lead single, “Get It,” sets the bar pretty high; if that track is any indication, Run the Jewels’ debut might be best-of-the-year material, too. But let’s see how it shakes out when the two share the stage at 9:30 Club this summer.
