The subjects of When the Song Dies are a much braver sort than the folks who freeze their bodies in We Will Live Again (at right). As they reminisce on a Scotland long past, they’re addressing their own fears of mortality. What is lost when they die? If family traditions die with them, does that mean they won’t be remembered? Director Jamie Chambers doesn’t try to answer these questions but instead pans through a quiet Scottish village with an eye for the ethereal. We’re left with a somber, but comforting message—even after we’re gone, the world that shaped us remains.
