The White Mandingos came together under modest circumstances. Writer/musician Sacha Jenkins—a former Silver Spring resident—forged a friendship with Bad Brains founding member Darryl Jenifer. They recorded some rap-rock instrumentals with another MC, but the music was never released. Jenkins recently found the CD of unreleased tunes and reached out to Jenifer and L.A. rapper Murs about forming a trio. The Mandingos’ resulting project, The Ghetto Is Tryna Kill Me, is a smart concept album told from the perspective of fictional character Tyrone White, a conflicted black artist who struggles with racial identity in his music and personal relationships. He’s from a Harlem housing project and performs rock. That makes their upcoming show an intriguing one: The White Mandingos are a fairly new group with little stage experience. What will the concept album look like in a live setting?
