Lauren Rice and Brian Barr, married artists who studied together at American University before taking off for Detroit, never really left D.C. behind. Rice put on a solo show at Transformer in 2011. And back in April, Rice and Barr co-curated a group show for the Columbia Heights group-house gallery Delicious Spectacle. Together, they’re showing “Fake Empire,” an exhibit of co-made paintings, installation, collages, and animation works at Flashpoint this fall. The show will be the pair’s third formal exhibition together. Their anything-goes approach to media suits collaboration, even as the painting-oriented works they produce tend to look highly individualistic. Think Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg working together on the same canvas installation, or a Jessica Stockholder made with the input of two people.
