If you relied solely on Pitchfork for your Gary Numan news, you’d think the synthpop pioneer was retired, except for that appearance on Battles’ Gloss Drop and some work with Trent Reznor. Check busy British site The Quietus, though, and a fuller picture emerges: Numan moved to Los Angeles in 2012; issued a crisp live album, Big Noise Transmission, earlier this year; and is prepping a studio work, Splinter: Songs From a Broken Mind, for release in October. If your only frame of reference is his still-vibrant ’80s hit “Cars,” the version on Big Noise Transmission encapsulates how age has added muscle and metal to Numan’s sound. It’s definitely rock music now.
