When Mark Lanegan announced plans for Imitations, an album of covers inspired partly by his parents’ record collection, the chatter was generally accepting. The grunge stalwart turning in covers of “Mack the Knife” and Neil Sedaka and Phil Cody’s “Solitaire”? Sure, why not! Tonight, when the gravelly voiced singer headlines Sixth & I, listen for dexterous takes on those vintage compositions and some new songs, too, including, if the audience is lucky, his faithful version of Chelsea Wolfe’s “Flatlands.” Whatever comes in between could be a surprise, but with Lanegan, even his surprises seem like pretty natural ideas in retrospect. Mark Lanegan performs with Sean Wheeler and Zander Schloss at 8 p.m.at Sixth & I Historic Synagogue, 600 I St. NW. $20-$25. (202) 408-3100. sixthandi.org.
