Local dance fans don’t need to take a Bolt bus to New York every weekend as long as they have the Rockville-based American Dance Institute. This weekend at ADI, catch Sally Silvers & Dancers’ “Bonobo Milkshake,” a performance that New York Times critic Claudia LaRocca named one of her top three dance shows from all of 2012. “It’s a doozy,” she wrote, and she meant that as a compliment. The performance integrates poetry inspired by Stephen Sondheim (and recited during the performance) with movement that ranges from mock Broadway to synchronized swimming. Yet there’s also secretive sexy partnering. At the New York premiere last November, the audience sat on the stage while the dancers performed on the theater floor and occasionally slinked off to the balcony to conduct “inscrutable acts.” Exactly how the show will be replicated at ADI’s black-box space isn’t clear, but they made it rain inside the theater at the last show, so anything’s possible. Sally Silvers & Dancers perform at 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the American Dance Institute, 1570 East Jefferson Drive, Rockville. $15–$30. (855) 263-2623. americandance.org.
