Perfect Pussy formed because of a John Cusack movie. No, not Say Anything—this Syracuse group isn’t pop-punk for mallrats. Singer Meredith Graves was asked by the director of the low-budget Cusack film Adult World to appear in a scene with her noise-punk band Shoppers, which had recently broken up. So Graves, bassist Greg Ambler, and drummer Garrett Koloski created a fake group, which morphed over time to include guitarist Ray McAndrew, with synths by Shaun Sutkus. Perfect Pussy’s debut, I Have Lost All Desire for Feeling, is 13 minutes of messy catharsis as Graves lays bare her emotions with unhinged abandon. While the band’s fast, distorted din prevents a clear hearing of Graves’ lyrics about wounded relationships, her manic delivery makes it clear: This is serious business. As Graves told Pitchfork recently, “I’m shouting because it feels like this stuff is important.” Don’t say anything, scream it. Perfect Pussy performs with Fell Types and Jail Solidarity at 8 p.m. at Black Cat Backstage, 1811 14th St. NW. $10–$12. (202) 667-4490. blackcatdc.com.
