One of the District’s most spectacular holiday programs involves audience participation, a DJ named Frosty the Snowman, and a dozen dancers stomping the stage about as hard as humanly possible. Back for its second season, Step Afrika!’s “Magical Musical Holiday Step Show” pairs the company’s famously fast-paced stepping with a heavy dose of holiday cheer. This athletic, percussive dancing has always been fun to watch (it was first developed for campus competitions among historically black fraternities) but the addition of a gamboling penguin and polar bear should take it to the next level. And if you’ve got overactive kids or an eye on the scale during this season of gluttony, the “interactive” event promises to get audiences up and moving. Step Afrika! performs Dec. 11 to 22 at Atlas Performing Arts Center, 1333 H St. NE. $15–$35.50. (202) 399-7993. atlasarts.org.
